Silver Spring Real Estate
The name Silver Spring was originally given to a spring in the area which is now called Acorn Park which flowed through chips of mica, giving it a silvery color. Francis Preston Blair built a mansion as a summer home there and called it "Silver Spring".
Silver Spring had a population of 71,452 recorded in the 2010 census with a population density of roughly 15,600 people per square mile. Silver Spring is an unincorporated area and, as such, the boundaries are not laid out anywhere in stone. During the Civil War Silver Spring was occupied by Confederate General Jubal Early.
Silver Spring, though sprawling out to Burtonsville, Wheaton and Olney has its business center at the crossroads of Colesville Road (Route 29) and Georgia Avenue, close to the central section which was restored and/or rebuilt around the beginning of the 2000s. The effort to rejeuvenate and rev up the Silver Spring area had lingered for years with many false starts, but this rebuilding marked the turning point for a change in the culture and character of the area with upscale condos, national chains such as Whole Foods, Pier 1 Imports, Ann Taylor Loft; restaurants such as Panera Bread, Fuddruckers, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Romano's Macaroni Grill and Cold Stone Creamery. Additionally, new office buildings have helped upgrade the image and popularity of the new Silver Spring. The idea to join Silver Spring with Bethesda by bus or light rail has been studied for years. It was originally imagined as connecting New Carrollton and Silver Spring. The National Capitol Region Transportation Planning Board approved the Purple Line light rail project to be incororated into the area's Constrained Long-Range Transportation Plan. The Purple Line has had a lot of support and also a lot of resistance, particularly with regard to the potential impact of its construction on the property values along the route of the light rail system.
