Olney and Brookeville Real Estate
Olney is located 20 miles north of Washington DC. Originally, when it was established in 1800, it was called Mechanicsville. Olney's town center lies at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Route 108 (Olney-Laytonsville Road). Brookeville lies to the north.
The 2000 census reported a population in Olney of 31.438 and a population density of roughly 2,420 people per square mile.
The land on which Olney stands was part of an original land grant by King George III in 1720. The size of the original grant was 2,550 acres.
Brookeville, 2 miles north of Olney in northeastern Montgomery Country was incorporated in 1808. The area was settled by Quakers and Brookeville was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Brookeville was founded in 1794 by Richard Thomas and Deborah Brooke.
During the War of 1812 the Federal government and troops fled Washington as the British were burning it. They stayed, along with President James Madison, in Brookeville on their flight path. It is said that Brookeville was the Capital of the United States for one day at this time.
The 2000 census reported the population of Brookeville to be 3,272 and a population density was roughly 933 people per square mile.
For many years, one of the most famous locales in Olney was the Olney Inn which was opened in 1926 and burned down in the late 70s. It is claimed that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a patron as well as many foreign dignetaries.
Today, two of the attractions to Olney are the Mannequin Pis Restaurant and, a little farther out, betweem Olney and Laytonsville, Blue Mash Golf Course.
