Gaithersburg runs from Rockville to Darnestown to Germantown and over to Montgomery Village.
2010 Census population of Gaithersburg was 135,332. The median age was 38.72 and the average persons per household was 2.97.
Gaithersburg, Maryland began in 1765 and was called Log Town. At one point the post office was known as Forest Oak. The name became Gaithersburg when it was incorporated in 1878. Not long thereafter, in 1884, the Gaithersburg Railroad Station was built, which was a major rail complex. Almost a hundred years later in 1978 the site was put on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gaithersburg Historical Association collects photographs and historical material much of which is on display at the Gaithersburg Community Museum.
Gaithersburg in known for its being the site of the former Atomic Energy Commision and, later, the National Bureau of Standards. There are many residential communities on either side of Route 270 as it stretches up to Germantown. Gaithersburg runs from roughly from Shady Grove Road out 355 to Montgomery Village and back down Route 20 to North Potomac.
Gaithersburg is has a Metro Station at Shady Grove Road on the Red Line. Also MARC trains stop at the Gaithersburg Train Station and then the Metropolitan Grove stop on the other side of 20 before heading further into Washington DC.
In 2008 and 2009 BusinessWeek named Gaithersburg #1 in the State of Maryland on its list of "Best Places to Raise Your Kids".
Gaithersburg is well stocked for shopping, with over 15 shopping centers of more than 25,000 square feet. Some of those are Rio, Kentlands and Lakeforest Malls.
