Ayrlawn is out Old Georgetown Road on the west side of the road. The neighborhood is near the National Institutes of Health and the Library of Medicine. Not too far up Old Georgetown Road is the ramp to the Beltway and also Wildwood Shopping Center which has shops and restaurants as well as a CVS and a Balducci's (like an upscale Whole Foods). Take a left at Wildwood Shopping center and drive a half mile down Democracy Lane and you will pass Westfield Shopping Mall which has a Nordtrom's, Ann Taylor, Abercrombie & Fitch and many others for a total of approximately 190 stores. Turn off Old Georgetown Road onto Cedar Lane and drive down the hill, taking a right on Wisconsin and you will drive by the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Also, back on Old Georgetown Road is a YMCA.
There were 6 sold homes in Aryrlawn in 2011, three of them above $1,000,000 and three between $450,000 and $600,000. These homes were Arts & Crafts, Cape Cods and Colonials. Arylawn is east of Ewing Drive, just south of Alta Vista Terrace, and north of Greentree Road. Aylawn Park lies in the middle of the neighborhood. The public school cluster is Walter Johnson High School, North Bethesda Middle School and Ayrlawn Elementary School. Like most of the nearby neighborhoods, Ayrlawn has seen a lot of homes bought by builders who have torn them down to build much bigger homes. The older homes which remain are predominately cape cods and ramblers and primarily without garages on regular-shaped 5,000 - 7,000 square foot lots.
The name Ayrlawn dates back to Ayrlawn Farms a hundred acre nearby dairy and poultry farm near Cedar Lane created by the purchase and merging of two smaller farms in the late 1920s.
