According to MapQuest Cabin John is a 13.31 mile drive to the White House which would take approximately 20 min. Cabin John is a tiny village built up along the river and canal Just past Wilson Lane and out MacArthur Boulevard outside Glen Echo. As of the last census there were 668 households in Cabin John with a population of 1,734 people.
The name Cabin John has not been clearly established. Around the turn of the 19th century it was the site of a huge and famous Victorian hotel, which later burned down. Also famous was the Cabin John Bridge also called the Union Arch Bridge (still in use) which was at one time the largest single span stone bridge in the world. It is also said that Jefferson Davis's signature was at one time chiseled into the bridge and later chiseled off.
Cabin John is spread out all over the land where Bethesda comes together with Potomac and Rockville. The residential Cabin John is south along the Potomac River, sectioned off by the Beltway, Cabin John Parkway and the Clara Barton Parkway. The east of Cabin John abuts Cabin Creek Park. A few miles to the north off Seven Locks Road lies Cabin John Regional Park, Cabin John Middle School and Cabin John Shopping Center. It would be difficult to draw a map of Cabin John because it is not all in one place. Like the historical reference of the name, it is ill-defined.
