Potomac Real Estate and Homes for Sale
The land which is now known as Potomac Village was originally settled by Edward Offut in 1714 after a land grant by George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) called "Clewerwall". Potomac was first called "Offut's Crossroads" and later changed because so many different locations were somebody or other's crossroads. Many of the earlier homes built in Potomac were used as country or weekend homes and only in later years did the area become widely used as a location for full time primary homesites.
The influence of horses and the hunt is everywhere present in Potomac - from active horse farms to former horse farms which have been subdivided and developed not to forget the Potomac Polo Club. The names are horsey and fox hunty throughout. Stable Lane, Saddle Ridge, Fox Hills, Bridle Lane, Buckboard Place, Coach Street, The Tally Ho Restaurant, and the Hunter's Inn Restaurant are examples.
Since a lot of the land in Potomac was either virgin forest or open horse farmland, when the original homes were put in, often there were no preexising utilities, such as gas or water, so the rule of the day was well and septic. Even today, many of the older homes remain on well and septic and many older neighborhoods have not had those service brought in.
Inside Falls Road in Potomac, you are much more likely to find homes built on one-acre or less. There are exceptions to this but the two acre zoning is common outside Falls Road. With the boom in building out River Road and Glen Road traffic at rush hours has become much more of an issue as the popularity of the area has risen. There are only a couple of options to get into and out of town.
