Near the Washington Cathedral, Woodley Park runs down to Connecticut Avenue bounded on the SE By Cleveland Avenue. There is a Woodley Park Metro stop on Connecticut Avenue.
Woodley Park was named after "Woodley" a Federal mansion built by Philip Barton Key, an uncle of Francis Scott Key, the aurthor of the "Star Spangled Banner". Development of Woodley Park began in the 1870s. The Taft Bridge was built over Rock Creek Park near the turn of the century and provided Woodley Park and points north with access to downtown Washington.
Two hotels in the neighborhood, the Sheraton-Park (now the Mariott Wardman Park) and the Shoreham (now the Omni Shoreham), have played a significant part in the history of the area. They were grand hotels with exquisite accomodations and were the scene of high society gatherings, debutante parties, ballroom dancing, etc. much of which has given way to coporate meeting rooms and more profitable and less exclusive endeavors.
The schools in the area include the Oyster-Adams Bilingual public elementary school and the Maret private school.
