The Somerset municipality, originally known as Somerset Heights, is situated west of Wisconsin Avenue and Chevy Chase, just south of Bethesda and just north of the District line and Friendship Heights. Somerset Heights was developed starting in 1890 along the Georgetown and Rockville Electric Railway. Incorporated in 1906, Somerset Heights originally consisted of 50 acres. The original architecture of the homes was primarily Victorian. Although the 1906 municipal boundaries of Somerset included 192 acres, the land outside the original 50-acre tract was owned solely by one family until 1946. The original lots have been continually resubdivided, and differing architectural styles can be found throughout the neighborhood. The lion's share of the homes in Somerset Heights were built between 1950 and 1970. The town of Somerset is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
It's about a 22 min. drive to the White House, depending on traffic, and it's roughly 7 1/2 miles. Over to Tysons corner Virginia it's roughly 19 min. drive time and about 11 1/2 miles. The tax records show 102 homes in Somerset proper. 406 homes are listed as Somerset Heights.
